How to Change Your Name on Voter Registration in Arkansas

Change your voter name without the Election Day scramble.

Arkansas uses a paper voter registration application for name changes. Mark the form as a name change, give your current and previous voter information, sign it, and send or deliver it through the proper voter-registration channel—most directly, your county clerk.

Independent guide: board-of-elections.org is not an Arkansas government office. Your county clerk and the Arkansas Secretary of State Elections Division control official voter-registration records.

How to change your name on voter registration in Arkansas

If your legal name changed because of marriage, divorce, a court order, or another lawful reason, Arkansas expects you to update your voter record.

The Secretary of State’s voter-registration FAQ gives a simple core instruction: use the Arkansas Voter Registration Application, check the box labeled “This is a name change”, complete the lower section for previous registration information, and submit the update to your county clerk.

This is not the same as registering twice. The form is designed to serve both first-time registrations and updates to an existing record. Arkansas Constitution Amendment 51 also recognizes the state mail voter-registration form as a way to make changes of name, address, or party affiliation.

Use your new legal name at the top

The main name fields identify the name you want on the active voter record.

Use the old name in the lower section

The form asks for the previous name and prior registration details so the county can connect the update to the existing record.

Sign and date the application

The form includes the voter’s certification and signature section. An incomplete or unsigned form can delay processing.

Verify after submission

Do not assume the record changed merely because you mailed or delivered a form. Check with the county clerk or VoterView.

Best practical route

For a straightforward name change, the state’s FAQ specifically directs voters to the county clerk’s office. That keeps the update with the local office responsible for your registration record.

02 / Complete the application

Exactly what to fill in on the Arkansas form

The current downloadable state form is a paper application. For a name change, both the upper registration section and the lower previous-information section matter.

  1. Check “This is a name change.”The form begins with checkboxes for new registration, name change, address change, and party change. Check every update that truthfully applies.
  2. Enter your current legal name.Complete the main name fields using the name you now legally use. Include applicable suffix information where needed.
  3. Enter your current residence address. The application asks for the address where you live, plus a mailing address if different. Voter registration is tied to residence, so do not substitute a work address simply because it is convenient.
  4. Add date of birth and identification number information. The form requests date of birth and asks for an Arkansas driver’s license number or, if you do not have one, the last four digits of your Social Security number. It also includes an option for applicants who have neither.
  5. Answer the eligibility questions. The form includes citizenship/residency, age, competency, and felony-status questions. Read the instructions carefully rather than copying old answers from memory.
  6. Sign and date the voter certification.Your signature certifies the information on the application. If another person assists because you cannot sign, the form contains an assistance section.
  7. Complete the lower “previous” section. For a name change, provide the previous name under which you were registered. The form also asks for previous address information where applicable and repeats date-of-birth information for matching.

Paper form, not a generic online profile edit

The Secretary of State’s registration-information page says Arkansas voter registration uses a paper Voter Registration Application. The website can provide a printable form or let you request one through the mail, but that is different from submitting a completed voter-registration update entirely online.

03 / Send it to the right place

Where to submit an Arkansas voter name change

Your county clerk is the most direct office for a name-change update because the clerk maintains the county’s voter-registration records.

The Secretary of State FAQ specifically says a voter who recently married should complete the name-change portion of the application and submit it to the county clerk’s office. Arkansas Amendment 51 also allows a registered voter to make a name change by completing and mailing a federal or state mail voter-registration application, by signing a mailed request to the permanent registrar that gives the present name and former registered name, or by applying in person at the permanent registrar’s office.

For a standard update, using the official state application is usually the clearest option because it collects the matching information in one place.

County clerk

Best direct route for a current Arkansas voter. Use the state’s county-clerk contact list to identify the office for your county of residence.

Secretary of State form

The printable application itself is issued by the Secretary of State. The fold-and-mail version also lists a Secretary of State voter-registration mailing address, but the state’s name-change FAQ directs voters to their county clerk.

Where can you get a blank application?

The Secretary of State lists several places: your county clerk, the Elections Division, local revenue or DMV offices, public libraries, disability agencies, and military recruitment offices. You can also print the English or Spanish form or request that an application be mailed to you.

If you are close to an election or have any unusual record problem, contact the county clerk before relying on ordinary mail delivery.

04 / Timing

Is there a deadline to change your voter-registration name?

Arkansas clearly publishes a 30-day cutoff for a new registration, but its voter FAQ does not state a separate 30-day deadline specifically for an already-registered voter’s legal-name update.

The official application states that a person who needs to qualify as a registered voter for the next election must apply 30 days before that election. For the November 3, 2026 general election, Arkansas’s official election calendar lists the registration deadline as Monday, October 5, 2026 because the nominal 30-day date falls on Sunday, October 4.

A voter who is already registered and is only updating a legal name is addressed separately in Amendment 51’s “transfer and change of status” provisions. The safest practical advice is still to update as soon as the legal name changes, particularly before early voting or Election Day.

Election close? Do not guess.

If your legal-name change happened close to an election and your voter record, photo ID, or absentee materials show different versions of your name, contact your county clerk before voting. The clerk can tell you what is currently on the registration record and what action is needed.

2026 dates worth knowing

  • General Election: November 3, 2026.
  • Early voting for the general election starts October 19, 2026.
  • New-registration deadline for the general election: October 5, 2026.
  • Name-change update: submit promptly; the state FAQ does not publish a separate name-change cutoff.
05 / Verify the change

How to confirm your new name is on the voter record

Submitting a form is only the first half of the task. Make sure the county actually processed it.

Arkansas tells voters not to assume they are registered merely because an application was submitted. The county clerk processes voter-registration records and sends a personalized voter-registration card after processing. The state’s registration guidance says this can take up to several weeks.

The official application itself instructs applicants to contact the county clerk if they have not received confirmation within two weeks. The Secretary of State FAQ also recommends checking with the county clerk or using the state’s voter lookup when confirmation does not arrive.

  1. Keep a copy or photo of the completed form. This gives you a reference for the spelling, date, and information you submitted.
  2. Allow the county clerk time to process it.Processing is not always immediate, especially near election deadlines.
  3. Check your voter information.Use Arkansas voter services/VoterView or contact the county clerk to verify the record now reflects your new name.
  4. Resolve errors before voting. If the record still shows the old name, do not keep submitting duplicate forms without asking what happened. Contact the clerk and identify the date and method of your first submission.
06 / Voting after the change

What your name change means for voter ID

Updating the voter record does not automatically update your driver’s license, passport, or other identification.

Arkansas requires voters to verify registration when voting with a qualifying document or identification card that shows the person’s name and photograph and is issued by an accepted government or accredited Arkansas postsecondary institution. If the document displays an expiration date, Arkansas generally permits it if it is current or expired no more than four years before the election.

Accepted examples include a driver’s license, photo identification card, concealed handgun carry license, U.S. passport, qualifying postsecondary employee or student ID, U.S. military ID, certain public-assistance photo ID, and the state’s voter verification card.

If your ID still shows your former name

The official voter-ID guidance explains what documents qualify, but it does not give a simple universal rule for every possible name-mismatch scenario. Contact your county clerk before Election Day rather than assuming that an old-name ID will or will not be accepted in your specific circumstances.

If you cannot verify registration at the polls

The Secretary of State says a voter who cannot provide the required verification may cast a provisional ballot. For a provisional ballot based on inability to verify registration, the voter can generally return to the county board of election commissioners or county clerk by 12:00 noon on the Monday following the election with qualifying identification, subject to the other validity rules for the ballot.

That provisional process is a fallback, not a reason to postpone a simple name update. Matching your voter record and identification as early as practical makes Election Day easier.

07 / More than the name changed?

If you also moved, update the address on the same application

A marriage, divorce, or other life change sometimes brings both a new name and a new residence. Arkansas’s form lets you identify more than one type of update.

If your address changed too, check both “This is a name change” and “This is an address change”. Enter the current residence in the main address fields and complete the previous-information section with the old name and previous address as applicable.

Address changes can affect your county, precinct, congressional district, local races, and polling location. That makes an address update more than a mailing correction.

Moving to another Arkansas county has a special timing rule

Arkansas’s current Secretary of State FAQ says a voter moving from one Arkansas county to another must transfer the registration to the new county. The FAQ states that the updated registration should reach the new county clerk no later than four days before a scheduled election to vote there. The current 2025 election-law compilation also contains amended transfer language; when a move is close to Election Day, rely on your county clerk for the rule that applies to your specific timing.

One form can carry multiple updates

Do not submit one form for the name and a second form for the address unless your clerk tells you to. The application says “check all that apply,” allowing a voter to identify multiple changes on one complete application.

08 / Real-life situations

Marriage, divorce, court order and other common scenarios

After marriage

Once your legal name changes, complete the voter application’s name-change sections. Use the new legal name in the current-name area and the former registered name in the lower section.

After divorce

If a divorce restores a prior legal name, update the voter record to the legal name you now use. The voter-registration form itself does not instruct ordinary name-change applicants to attach a divorce decree.

After a court-ordered name change

Update the voter registration after the legal change takes effect. Enter the current legal name and the prior voter-registration name so the county can match the record.

Name and residence changed together

Check both update boxes and complete both present and previous information accurately. If the move crossed county lines, contact the new county clerk.

Do you have to send a marriage certificate or court order?

The Arkansas Voter Registration Application does not list a marriage certificate, divorce decree, or name-change court order as a standard attachment for an ordinary voter-registration name update. It asks for identifying information, eligibility answers, signature, and previous-registration details.

That is different from other Arkansas records. A driver’s license, passport, Social Security record, notary commission, or other credential may have its own documentary requirements. Changing voter registration does not automatically update those systems.

09 / Avoid delays

Mobile-friendly by design

Long text uses normal word wrapping, cards stack automatically, and tables become labeled records on narrow screens. Only the “In This Guide” row scrolls sideways, preventing page-wide horizontal overflow.

12 / Quick answers

Arkansas voter-registration name change FAQs

How do I change my name on Arkansas voter registration after marriage?

Complete the Arkansas Voter Registration Application, check “This is a name change,” fill out the current-information section and the lower previous-information section, sign it, and submit it to your county clerk.

Can I change my Arkansas voter-registration name completely online?

The Secretary of State’s registration page says voters must fill out a paper Voter Registration Application. You can download the form online or request one by mail, but downloading or requesting the form does not itself update the record.

Do I need a marriage certificate to update voter registration?

The standard Arkansas voter-registration application does not list a marriage certificate as a required attachment for an ordinary name-change update. If your county clerk needs clarification in an unusual case, follow the clerk’s instructions.

What if I changed both my name and address?

Check both the name-change and address-change boxes and complete all current and previous information that applies. If you moved to another county, contact the clerk in the new county promptly.

Where do I send the voter-registration name-change form?

The Secretary of State FAQ directs voters changing their name to submit the form to their county clerk’s office. Use the official county-clerk directory for the correct destination.

How long does the update take?

The state’s registration-information page says a county clerk’s voter-registration processing can take up to several weeks. The application advises contacting the clerk if confirmation has not arrived within two weeks.

Is the 30-day registration deadline also the name-change deadline?

Arkansas publishes a 30-day deadline for new voter-registration applications. Its name-change FAQ tells already-registered voters to update after a legal name change but does not state a separate 30-day name-change cutoff. If an election is near, contact your county clerk.

What if my photo ID still has my old name?

Arkansas voter-verification rules require qualifying photo identification that shows the person’s name. Because the state’s published guidance does not reduce every name-mismatch case to one simple rule, ask your county clerk what to do before voting.

How can I confirm the county processed my new name?

Check with the county clerk and use Arkansas voter services/VoterView. Do not rely only on proof that you mailed the form.

Can I submit a signed letter instead of the full state form?

Arkansas Amendment 51 recognizes a signed mailed request to the permanent registrar that gives the voter’s present name and the name under which the voter was last registered. The official application is still the clearest standard method because it collects all relevant record-matching information.
